Here’s a guide to help you store your fridge contents appropriately. You’ll find that your fruits and veggies stay fresh and crisp longer, your milk and eggs are of right temp/consistency, and you’ll find there is actually more room in your fridge than you thought.
image1. Lets start with the shelves on the door. This area is said to be the warmest part, as well as fluctuating temps. from opening the fridge
  • condiments: ketchup, mayo, dressing, pickles or anything pickled, salsa
  • pasteurized orange juice
  • butter, soft cheeses like brie, mozzarella, feta, cream cheese, ricotta

2. Top shelf is also considered a warm area (remember hot/warm air rises)

  • drinks
  • left overs stored correctly
  • sauces, hummus
  • nuts

3. Middle shelf has the most consistency in temperature

  • carton of eggs
  • sandwich meats
  • bacon

4. Bottom shelf is the coldest

  • milk, all the way in the back
  • yogurt
  • cottage cheese, sour cream
  • RAW meat/fish (make sure to place on a plate/container to prevent contamination/spill)
  • if you use them, keep your arm & hammer baking soda fridge-n-freezer boxes on this shelf
  • If you squeeze your own orange juice, store it here

5. Crisper (if available) is low in humidity

  • fruits

6. High humidity or Vegetable drawer is just that! Veggies. Don’t wash or chop up your veggies before storing. They’ll spoil much faster. 



+ Never mix your fruits and vegetables in the same drawer

+ Celery & lettuce: wrap them up in paper towels and place them in a plastic bag

+ store veggies in plastic bag, tied loosely

+ Fill up your fridge but don’t over pack it - your fridge feeds off the “cool” foods and drinks you have when the door is opened. Store bottles or jugs of water if you don’t cook and survive on take-out (which you should probably cut down/out!) 

+ did you know your fridge will properly cool its contents for 4 hours if the power goes out? Just leave the door CLOSED! Same goes for your freezer: “freezer will maintain its temperature for 48 hours if full and 24 if half-full” REAL SIMPLE, OCTOBER 2012



Making homemade hummus just isn’t the same as the store-bought kind. Why? Because the consistency just isn’t as smooth. Right? So here’s a tip to fix that…



After draining and rinsing your canned garbanzo beans, peel them! The peel is what causes the “roughness” in your homemade hummus. Getting each and every single bean isn’t necessary, but majority will help.

 The peel should slide right off when lightly squeezed. You can also grab a little less than a handful and gently rub them in between your hands. If you mush some along the way, that’s ok - they’re getting blended anyway!

  • Beauty benefits: The polyphenols found in the oil have also been found to slow the process of aging and help prevent degenerative diseases. When used on the hair or scalp, olive oil can be used as a deep conditioner and a dandruff controller.
  • Can also be used as body lotion where skin is prone to be dry. IE: elbows, heels, feet, knees, etc                        



  • use as a make-up remover and moisturizer since it contains linoleic acid, a compound not made by the body, but which prevents water from evaporating.
  • use to rid acne and acne marks
  • remove fine lines around face and continuously apply to stretch marks to reduce visibility.
  • tighten skin by using 2 egg yolks and half a cup of olive oil
  • moisten dry skin with olive oil by rubbing in dry areas daily. (dandruff, psoriasis, elbows, winter-skin, etc)
  • mix brown sugar, honey, and olive oil to create an all-natural face scrub. great for oily skin! (like m e)
  • exfoliate by rubbing olive oil on desired area and rub coarse salt or sugar and rinse.
  • apply on hair to manage the frizz or stubborn flyaways
  • before a manicure, soak hands in water and olive oil to moisturize cuticles
  • control/clean earwax and cure earaches by moistening up a q-tip with olive oil and clean the outside ear cavity
  • use for a close shave and also as an after-shave lubricant

Lice treatment

  • treat lice. section out hair a little at a time, saturate hair with olive oil making the scalp very oily.
  • Leave it on for 30-40 minutes. Doing this prevents the lice and their eggs room to breathe.
  • Comb hair with a metal nit comb in 1-inch sections making sure there isn’t any trying to fly out.
  • After a complete comb-out, rinse with Dawn dish washing soap to cut down the grease. (FYI: DAWN soap has been known to be very effective on ticks and fleas with dogs, as well.)
  • Repeat steps for two weeks or until head is clear of lice!


  • helps remove sticky gunk
  • rub olive oil on leather goods, leave it on for 20-30 minutes, wipe of excess to condition leather
  • gently apply on diaper rash to cure rash
  •  great for oiling up squeaky doors (While WD-40 may work well, it’s also based on hydrocarbons, so any time we can use less of those we’re taking a step toward a cleaner world.)
  • it’s even safe for personal use! personal lubrication
  • it eases snoring. take a sip of olive before heading to bed to lubricate throat muscles
  • polish your furniture and metals
  •  preserve herbs (chives, sage, basil, etc. can be preserved in oil. Chop and blend herbs with enough oil to make a paste and store in the refrigerator for up to a month or in the freezer for up to six months.)
